Pool Equipment Upgrades from Orlando to Miami

Pool equipment is everything that moves, filters, heats and sanitizes your water: pump, filter, heater, chlorine system, lights and controls. Choosing the right setup for a Florida pool lowers running costs, keeps the water clearer and makes the pool easier to own.

Why is a variable-speed pump worth it?

A variable-speed pump runs slower for most of the day, which saves electricity, runs quieter and filters more gently. It is the biggest upgrade for most pools because the pump is usually the largest electrical load on the equipment pad.

Most replacement pumps now sold are variable-speed, and they pair well with automation. We size the pump to your pool and plumbing, not just to the old pump, since the wrong size wastes the benefit.

Which filter is right for my pool?

Cartridge, sand and DE filters all work. The best choice depends on how much debris you get, how much maintenance you want and the plumbing you already have. We explain the options and the upkeep that comes with each one.

Heat pump or gas heater in Florida?

For most Florida pools, a heat pump is the better everyday choice. Our mild winters keep the air warm enough for it to work efficiently, and it costs less to run than gas over a season. A gas heater heats faster and works in colder air, which suits a spa you want hot on short notice.

Solar can also help in a sunny state, though it needs roof or ground space. We look at how you swim, when you swim and whether you have a spa, then recommend what fits.

What about salt, lights and automation?

A salt chlorine generator makes chlorine from salt in the water. It reduces handling of chlorine and gives a softer feel, but it is not maintenance-free. The cell needs cleaning, and salt can damage some natural stone, so we check your deck materials first.

LED lights use little power and last long, and many color options can be controlled from your phone. Automation ties pump, heater, lights and features into one control, with schedules and remote access. See pool features and upgrades for related additions.

Can the equipment pad be moved?

Yes. Relocating the pad can free up yard space, cut noise near a bedroom or put equipment out of sight. It means new plumbing and electrical runs, so we plan the route and tell you at the estimate whether a permit applies.

Equipment in Florida also needs protection from storms and flooding. We discuss pad height, wind and drainage, and in Miami-Dade and Broward the hurricane code can apply to anything attached to a structure.

Options at a glance

Variable-speed pump

Runs at low speeds most of the day and ramps up for cleaning, heating and features.

  • Lower electricity use
  • Quieter operation
  • Works with automation
  • Higher upfront cost than single-speed
  • Needs correct programming

Cartridge filter

Pleated cartridges trap fine debris and clean by hosing off.

  • Filters fine particles well
  • No backwashing
  • Saves water
  • Cartridges wear out eventually
  • Needs regular hose-off cleaning

Sand filter

Water passes through sand, and backwashing flushes the debris out.

  • Simple and durable
  • Low ongoing cost
  • Backwashing uses water
  • Filters less finely than cartridge or DE

DE filter

Diatomaceous earth coats grids and traps the finest particles.

  • Finest filtration
  • More upkeep
  • DE powder must be added and handled with care

Heat pump

Moves heat from the air into the water using electricity.

  • Efficient in Florida's climate
  • Lower running cost than gas
  • Slower heating
  • Less effective in cold air

Gas heater

Burns natural gas or propane to heat the water quickly.

  • Fast heating
  • Works in any air temperature
  • Higher running cost
  • Needs a gas supply or tank

Questions about pool equipment

Straight answers. If yours isn't here, call (689) 225-1200.

Will a variable-speed pump actually save money?

Usually, yes. Running slower for most of the day uses far less electricity than a single-speed pump. The size of the saving depends on your pool and your electric rate.

Is a heat pump good enough for Florida winters?

For most homes, yes. It works best when the air is mild, which is most of the year here. On the coldest nights it heats more slowly, and a gas heater is quicker.

Is a salt system maintenance-free?

No. The cell needs periodic cleaning, and you still test the water. Salt can also affect some natural stone, so tell us what your deck is made of.

Can I control my pool from my phone?

Yes, with an automation system. We set up schedules and remote control for pump, heater, lights and features.

Do I need a permit to replace equipment?

It depends on the work and your address. We tell you at the estimate if a permit is needed, and it is listed in the proposal.

Can you move my equipment pad?

Yes. We plan new plumbing and electrical runs, and tell you what that involves before work starts.
